Comment:- Yesterday afternoon while I was sitting in one of the shelter sheds Colleen came over to me introduced herself and invited me over to their van where I met Dennis, her husband. They are from Perth and enjoying travelling around the top end. I really appreciated the couple of cold beers with them also the donation to the asthma foundation.
I excused myself to go and cook tea before it got dark. I then washed up and wandered next door to visit Geoff and Samantha from Mount Gambier. Enjoyed a couple of cups of tea with them before retiring to bed about 8.45pm.
It was quite a warm night and despite my mattress deflating I had a good nights sleep. Up about 5.30am had breakfast, packed up and said my farewells I was on the road by 6.45am.
Another nice day with a cloudless sky and little to no wind to start with. I feel the road is slightly climbing towards Broome. Light traffic to start then about 9am a surge of vans heading for Broome. I considered stopping for about an hour until the traffic settled down then I thought, no, its getting warm and I want to reach Roebuck Plains before it gets too hot. I just poked along slowly.
Had my break about 8.45am, about 50 km out. The number of birds I could hear chirping was amazing then a car shatters the scene.
Arrived at Roebuck Plains Roadhouse about 12.30pm and was quite upset at the fees they want $30 for a powered or unpowered site. No difference. I voiced my dissatisfaction and reluctantly paid. This would be by far the most expensive park I have stayed in. A supply and demand situation. Boome is overflowing with vans and this park is picking up the slack. People are staying here and doing day trips into Broome which is only 30km away.
Tomorrow I will be out of here and on my way to Goldwire, a distance of 137km. Not sure what I will find there but it is a Rest Area.

Distance:- 59.26 Km
Distance to Date:- 7670.3 Km
Start:- Willare Bridge Roadhouse Caravan Park
Finish:- Nillibubbica Rest Area
Comment:- Last night I had tea in the café along with a bottomless cup of tea. Watched a bit of telly before charging all my batteries, computer and phone, then off to bed by 9.30pm
Up about 5.30am packed up, then enjoyed a cooked breakfast in the café. I would like to thank the management of the Willare Roadhouse for their generous contribution. It is much appreciated.
On the road by 7am with hardly a cloud in the sky and not a breath of wind. I did find it hard to get going, and settled down about 20km out. It was such a relaxing oasis.
Quite a lot of water still laying around resulting from the unprecedented rain they had three weeks ago. There were a couple of long one way bridges to cross today. The road seemed to be gradually climbing today or I still had my brake on. Quite a low average for the day.
A number of tourist buses passed me on their way to the Kimberly’s and else where. A number of caravans travelling to and from Derby to Broome but not As many as I was expecting from all the talk I have heard. A couple of trucks and that was it.
Decided to stop at Nillibubbica Rest Area as it was getting quite warm on the road. it’s a big area with two shelters and toilets. There are five vans here now and I would expect a few more before the days finished.
I was offered a cup of tea by a traveller who had stopped for lunch and ended up having about three before he was on his way
My Thermarest mattress sprung a leak overnight so I tried to find the leak with some soapy water but to no avail. Someone suggested I fill it with water but its not possible out here. We will see what happens tonight. It might have just been the valve.
Tomorrow I will go to Roebuck Plains Roadhouse a distance of 59km

Distance to Date:- 7611.0 Km
Start:- Willare Bridge Roadhouse Caravan Park
Finish:- Willare Bridge Roadhouse Caravan Park
Comment:- Had a good nights sleep and finally crawled out of bed about 7am. Had breakfast then spent some time checking the bike and trailer over.
I then spent some time checking my route for the next few days as I head across towards Broome then down towards Port Hedland. What I hope to do:-
28/7 Willare Road House to Nillibubbica Rest Area 60km
29/7 Nillibubbica Rest Area to Roebuck Plains R/H 59km
30/7 Roebuck Plains R/H to Goldwire Rest Area 137Km
31/7 Goldwire Rest Area to Stanley Rest Area 60Km
1/8 Stanley Rest Area to Sandfire Roadhouse 106Km
2/8 Sandfire Roadhouse to Pardoo Roadhouse 124Km
3/8 Pardoo Roadhouse to DeGrey Rest Area 71Km
4/8 DeGrey Rest Area to South Hedland 83Km
At this stage I am 8 days ahead of my schedule.
Got back to my tent and discovered I had a flat tyre on BOB. I couldn’t believe it. And when I found the hole it was on the inside of the tube. So I checked all my spoke ends and nothing there so it had top be a small stone or something similar. Anyhow patched up the tube reassemble the wheel. Pumped it up and within half an hour it was flat again. It seems the air pressure was too much for the patch as it blew a hole in it. Replaced the patch and tested the tube in a tub of water, all OK. Reassembled wheel and inflated, and this time it lasted an hour. Put my spare tube in and at this stage all seems OK.
Its been very hot up here about 35 degrees I have heard people say. All I know I am glad I am having a rest day. Washing all done, folded, and packed away. Did a couple of Suduko puzzles. Not much else you can do around here.
I hope to make an early start tomorrow and be off the road before it gets too hot.

Day 134
Date:- 26 July 2010
Distance:- 141.76 Km
Distance to Date:- 7611.0 Km
Start:- Ellendale Rest Area
Finish:- Willare Bridge Roadhouse Caravan Park
Comment:- Last night I cooked tea about 5.30pm, washed up and in bed by 6.15pm. Not to bad a night for sleeping. Got up about 5am and on the road by 6.15am.
A road construction workers camp was just over the hill from the rest area and from 5am onwards a procession of equipment headed out for a days work. About 6km from the rest area the road works I have been hearing about started. Traffic was directed onto a gravel detour road for about 8km. A little bumpy but not too bad. Two cars and a truck threw up a bit of dust otherwise I had it all to myself.
A beautiful sunny morning with a very light breeze. I had my break about 45km out at 8.45am. I have been making good time.
Crossing the Erskine Range shortly after my break. That knocked my average a bit.
Stopped at the Boab Tree Rest Area about 68 km from Ellendale Rest Area about 11.15am. I no sooner parked my bike when a woman came up to me and offered to fill my water bottles. I said yes, she then offered me a couple of slices of buttered raison bread and a lovely ice cold coke. She and her husband were travelling the top end and don’t have to be home till next Easter.
Because it was only 11.30am I decided to continue on to Willare Bridge another 55km. I reached the Broome/Derby turnoff about 2.30pm, turned left on the Great Northern Highway and 13 km to my destination.
Coming into Willare Bridge was like an oasis in a desert. Green grass everywhere, shade, a very welcoming place. Booked in And was pleasantly surprised at the fees so immediately booked another day.
Wheeled my bike into the park and straight away was offered a cup of tea by another kind lady. It was that nice I had another before setting off to put my tent up. Gathered all my washing and put in in a machine. The washing machines were free here. Had a shower and shave and ready to relax.
Had a very nice meal in the café, rang Evon then did my diary, now I am ready for bed. Looking forward to the Rest Day tomorrow.
Day 133
Date:- 25 July 2010
Distance:- 87.20 Km
Distance to Date:- 7469.2 Km
Start:- Tanunda Caravan Park - Fitzroy Crossing
Finish:- Ellendale Rest Area
Comment:- Went to the temporary supermarket to purchase more provisions. The original supermarket burnt down a few months ago and they have set up a temporary one in the local gymnasium. A new building is going up on the original site to house the new supermarket and a couple of specialty shops.
Last night I asked the caretakers of the caravan park where is a good place to get a meal and they suggested The Fitzroy Crossing Inn but it’s a 40 minute walk from the park. They offered me a car which I took. I drove to the Inn and “pegged out” on a buffet tea for $27. I had a bowl of vege soup, two main courses, 4 bread rolls, an ice cream sweet, a piece of fruit (orange) and three cups of tea. Real good value.
Back at the park it was a noisy night with people shouting and dogs barking. I did manage to get a reasonable sleep. Rang “Macca” about 4.30am and again no response.
I came very close to “snapping” yesterday. I arrived at the park and proceeded to put my tent up when inevitably someone comes and asks you the usual questions and generally I answer them as I go about my tasks. I had entered the amenities block and having a shave when this bloke bowls in and starts pumping me with questions. I told him I would like to have a shave and a shower then I could chat with him. That wasn’t good enough for him he just kept talking. I was starting to fume. I just grabbed all my stuff and went into a shower cubicle and shut the door. I think he got the message.
Up about 6.30am this morning and on the road by 7.45am. Another nice day. A little cloud around but that burnt off fairly quickly and a light south easterly breeze.
Had to give room to three wide load trucks early in the day and it was quite a busy road to start with considering it was Sunday. Not as much as the day progressed.
I still had mobile phone coverage up to 35km out of Fitzroy Crossing. Generally it is only with in 10 km of a town. At 45.5 km from Fitzroy Crossing was the turn off to Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek. A must see for anyone travelling through the area.
Stopped for my break about 46 km out about 11am. Back on the road and a nice three km run down hill, and then a 15 km stretch of road which was dead straight, just slightly undulating.
Arrived at Ellendale Rest Area about 2.30pm and found a good site under a tree. Pitched tent, etc, then had a lay down for a couple of hours listening to the radio.
Did my diary after which I will cook tea and and go for a wander before I go to bed.
Tomorrow I expect to go to Willare Road House a distance of 91 Km.

Day 132
Date:- 24 July 2010
Distance:- 97.40 Km
Distance to Date:- 7381.9 Km
Start:- Ngumban Cliffs Rest Area
Finish:- Tanunda Caravan Park - Fitzroy Crossing
Comment:- Up at 5.45am (daylight) and on the road by 6.45am. There was about a three quarters of a kilometre ride back to the Great Northern Highway and then on our way to Fitzroy Crossing.
Overcast this morning with a chilly south east wind blowing about 10 - 15 knots. Glad its blowing in my favour. I had the wind jacket and the long legs on for the first 15 km.
Its amazing scenery as the road winds its way around all the rocky outcrops and the sun strikes them. The wind had moderated for a short period and then came in more easterly and the cloud had started to burn off.
Had a tremendous run for the first 50 km averaging about 24 kmh with a tail wind. Had my break at 50 km about9.30am. The road then swung north and my tail wind was now a side wind and my average dropped away quickly.
Quite a bit of cloud building up all around now and the wind has moderated some what. The shoulder of the road ended about 30 km from Fitzroy Crossing and the road became narrow, fortunately not much traffic. Had a good run in the crossing arriving about 12.30pm at the caravan park.
Not sure what I will do tomorrow, whether I have a rest day or head off down the road to Ellendale Rest Area, a distance of 87 Km.
Day 131
Date:- 23 July 2010
Distance:- 83.72 Km
Distance to Date:- 7284.5 Km
Start:- Mary Pool Rest Area
Finish:- Ngnamban Rest Area
Comment:- Dingoes were howling through the night and a four legged animal ran past my tent about 2.30am in the morning. I did have a good sleep though. There were about 50 - 60 vans camped here last night.
I was up at 5.45am and on the road by 6.45am. Overcast day with an east south easterly wind of 5 - 10 knots and increased as the day progressed. It was cool enough to put my wind jacket on for the first 15 km. Very pleasant riding conditions.
Clouds started to burn off about mid morning and the day was starting to warm up.
About 38 km out a sign pointed to accommodation. Larrawa Station was offering Nature Stay Accommodation for tents, caravans, or a bed for the night.
Stopped for my break 40 km out about 9.30am and then had a good run all the way to Ngumban Rest Area arriving about 11.45am.
Not much shelter from the wind but spectacular views through the gorges. Set up my tent, had a cup of soup for lunch then did my diary.
Through the afternoon vehicles came and went. A couple of tour buses stopped so the passengers could stretch their legs. Had a good chat with the second tour bus driver who filled my empty water bottles and offered me a cold stubbie of VB. That went down very nicely.
Had tea about 5.30pm, washed up and into bed by 6.45pm. It gets dark early and it was too windy and cold to sit outside, so to bed it was and listen to the radio and the footy match between Hawthorn and Saint Kilda. Woke up a few times through the night and the wind was still blowing fairly strongly. There were 7 caravans and three tents oversighting here.
Tomorrow it will be Fitzroy Crossing.
Day 130
Date:- 22 July 2010
Distance:- 109.59 Km
Distance to Date:- 7200.70 Km
Start:- Halls Creek Caravan Park
Finish:- Mary Pool
Comment:- I was in bed by 9.30pm last night after charging all my batteries. Very good nights sleep. Up about 6.45am and on the road by 8am. An east to south easterly wind of about 10 to 15 knots was blowing and a bit of light cloud around.
The road was excellent all the way to Mary pool with a metre wide breakdown lane for 85% of the way. Last 10 km the surface was quite rough.
Passed the turnoff for Alice Springs about 17.5 km out of Halls Creek, more commonly known as the Tanami Track.
There was a little bit of traffic around and everyone was in waving mode. A police car came up along side me waved and tooted his horn then took off.
Stopped for my break at 60km out at about 11.30am then back on the road to Mary Pool. My map said 119 Km to Mary Pool and the Rest Area Guide said 117 Km and you can imagine my delight when around the next corner “Rest Area 500m” and my computer read 107km.
An uneventful trip and I arrived at Mary Pool about 2.30pm. Chose a site, set up camp then wandered around the area. Met some people from Ocean Grove up here on holiday.
Cooked tea about 5.30pm (it gets dark early and quickly), washed up then wandered again before retiring to bed about 7.30pm
Will head for Ngumban Cliff Rest Area tomorrow a distance of 80 km
Wednesday, July 21, 2010
Day 129
Date:- 21 July 2010
Distance:- 104.42 Km
Distance to Date:- 7091.1 Km
Start:- Leycester’s Rest Area
Finish:- Halls Creek Caravan Park
Comment:- Yesterday afternoon after I had finished my diary someone came up for a chat. It was Philip who I had met in a previous rest area and he had a nice cold beer he gave me. He told me his wife was baking some bread and would I like to try some. I said yes so he would call me when it was ready.
I then wandered around the rest area, reading the various info boards and started to go back to my tent when I got the call. Bread ready, so over I went. Josie, Philips wife made me a coffee and gave me a slice of her bread with butter and plum jam on it. It was very nice.
I cooked tea and then washed up then got talking to a couple of young men from Victoria. David from Melbourne and Andrew from Shepparton. They had travellel up from Victoria fairly quickly and slipping into tourist mode. Into the Bungle Bungles, then the Gibb River Road and then who knows. After sampling a nice spot of Port with the boys I excused my self and went to bed.
Up at 5am and on the road by 6am after saying my goodbyes to everyone. A beautiful morning with the sun just rising behind me.
About 7am I hit a new milestone 7000 km or half way. I am on my way home dear. I won’t be long.
Spotted something running across the road about 200 metres in front of me. Possibly a wild cat. Light brown in colour, rounded head and a long curved tail.
An easterly breeze has come in offering a little assistance. The first 30 km was quite hilly and with the side wind was hard work. The road flattened out a bit but it seemed like I was gradually climbing.
Rode past Springvale Station where they were loading cattle onto trucks. I don’t know what their destination was. Stopped for my break about 50km out at 10am.
Road works soon after and they had one lane closed as they repaired the erosion caused by the recent rain. I was under pressure as I lead a line of cars through about 1.5 km. Another set of road works 5km further on but no delays as they were working on improving the drainage.
I then had about 15km run into Halls Creek arriving about 3.30pm at the caravan park. Booked in, tent up, shave and shower, then hand washed two sets of riding gear, then it was off downtown for a quick look around. Had a very nice meal at the local hotel, then back to the park to do my diary.
A gentleman with a GPS told me I had been climbing since I left Kununarra. Kununarra was about 120 metres above sea level and Halls Creek was about 650 metres. That made me feel better.
Off to Mary Pool tomorrow a distance of 117 km, next day will be Ngumban Cliff Rest Area, then Fitzroy Crossing. So I will be off the air till I get to Fitzroy Crossing
A small thing to remember, someone was using a mobile phone in Leycesters Rest Area. He had coverage with Optus.
Day 128
Date:- 20 July 2010
Distance:- 62.22 Km
Distance to Date:- 6986.8 Km
Start:- Warmun Roadhouse Caravan Park
Finish:- Leycester’s Rest Area
Comment:- Last night after tea I did my diary, updated my Blog and checked my Emails etc. I had a good fast internet connection. I was then invited for a cuppa from the two couples I had met earlier. Bed by 8.30pm and a good nights sleep.
I was up about 5am, had some breakfast, packed and ready for the road. Invited to tea and toast before I went to the park reception to claim my deposit back.
On theb road by 6.30am with a nice clear morning and very little breeze. Had to give way to a couple of oversize loads early in the day. A narrow road with no shoulders and a few one way bridges made things interesting to say the least.
A south eastery started to come in about 9.30am about the time I decided to have my break. I had my break on the side of the road opposite Frog Hollow, a closed aboriginal community.
Rode into Muluks Rest Area, a rather new area, but no facilities Maybe good for oversighting in a caravan. It was roughly 40 km from Warnum.
Passed the turnoff for the Kimberley Nickle Mine. The road is not quite as lumpy (hilly) as the first 30 km but was genently going uphill.
Turnoff to the Bungle Bungles National Park on my left and then Spring Creek Rest Area on my right. Only 5 km to my destination for the day.
Arrived at Leycester’s Rest Area about 12.30pm. It is a very big area with two basic long drop toilets, fire places and a few shelters. Chose my spot next to a shelter so I can lock the bike up and use the shelter for cooking etc.
Will have a lazy afternoon to prepare for the big day tomorrow when I hope to head for Halls Creek about 100km.

Day 127
Date:- 19 July 2010
Distance:- 116.68 Km
Distance to Date:- 6924.60 Km
Start:- Dunham River Rest Area
Finish:- Warmun Roadhouse Caravan Park
Comment:- Last night I cooked tea about 5.30pm, washed up and in bed by 7.30pm and had a good nights sleep. Got up about 5am had breakfast, packed and ready for the road when Pam my next door camping partner offered me a cup of tea and who am I to refuse that. I enjoyed a nice cuppa with Mike and Pam (they are from Denmark, down south in Western Australia), In fact they offered me a coffee on their arrival in the rest area.
I was on the road by 7am. Nice cool morning, good road and very little traffic in the early stages. A gentle uphill climb for the first 15km and then a 5 km downhill run as I cross the various mountain ranges.
There are still a number of one lane bridges in use, I suppose the volume of traffic doesn’t warrant new bridges. It is very nice riding through this area with the rocky outcrops and ever changing colours.
Stopped at the Doon Doon Roadhouse about 10.15am where I had a pie and a couple of cups of free coffee (driver/reviver). Sent an SMS to Evon to tell her I was OK. There was a caravan park there. And the distance from the rest area was only 26 km not 33 as per the mains road department leaflet.
The road ahead was quite a bit more undulating than yesterday with a couple of hills needing some special attention. Stopped about 11.30am for my break about 51km out from the rest area. The wind seems to filling in from the south east again.
I have seen a number of horses wandering along the road. They don’t seem too afraid of me as I approach, but keep their distance.
The rest of the trip was quite hard work. I was travelling in a south east direction which meant I had a head wind. It was blowing an estimated 5 - 10 knots gusting to 15 and the route was even more undulating than when I started. You would approach a hill and you could feel the velocity of the wind increase as you climbed. There seemed to be a venturi action happening.
I found the last 15 km very hard and I was quite happy to see the Warnum Roadhouse appear on the horizon. A very long day. Booked in, set up tent, had a very nice hot shower, then a well earned meal.
Started typing my diary when the two couples I had met in the rest area returned from their trip into the Bungle Bungles. They invited me over for a hot drink before they retired for the night.
Afew people have asked me about an equipment list. If you open the April achive of my blog a complete list was added there.
Tomorrow I hope to get to the Leycester’s Rest Area, a distance of 60 km from Warnum.

Day 126
Date:- 18 July 2010
Distance:- 80.41 Km
Distance to Date:- 6807.8 Km
Start:- Kimberleyland Holiday Park - Kununarra
Finish:- Dunham River Rest Area
Comment:- Had a chat with Glen from Pambula before I had my tea, watched a bit of TV, then rang Evon only to be told I was an hour early. My phone had been turned back by 2.5 hours and it should have only been 1.5 hours. Manually reset phone clock so all should be right now.
I was up at 5.45am after ringing “Macka” again. No return call. A little frustrating.
On the road by 7.30am and rode past the Kununarra Airport on the right and the golf club on the left. Then over the spillway of Lake Kununarra. I then turned onto the Great Northern Highway about 45 km out of Kununarra about 10.30am.
Good road with very light traffic flow. Stopped for my half way break at 11am. A 5 - 10 knot south easterly breeze was starting to fill in and since I am generally heading that way, it called a head wind. There are a couple of advantages of a head wind, they being no flies around your face and in your eyes and secondly the breeze helps to keep your body cool.
Arrived at Dunham River Rest Area and it didn’t look too bad, a few vans in here already so I decided to camp here for the night. Should be able to make an early start in the morning and get to Warmun by tomorrow night. A distance of 107 km.

Comment:- All times are now in WA Time
It is hard adjusting to the change of time. Had tea about 6.30pm, wandered around the park for about anhour before going to bed. A good night for sleeping. Put my radio on and heard Geelong was losing the footy, so turned it off and went to sleep.
Awoke about 7am and got up and had breakfast. Needed money for the washing machine so up to reception for change. Washing done and hung then I jumped on the bike and went into the Visitors Centre for some info.
There was a market on so wandered through the various stalls then around the shops before going back to the caravan park for lunch.
A bit concerned about the security of gear around after talking to Glen, a next door neighbour who had a Ctek battery charger stolen while he was in town.
Checked over the bike and trailer, changed all my water bottles and refilled them. Collected my washing and folded and packed it. Then filled in the rest of the afternoon relaxing and chatting to different people.
Tomorrow I am off to Doon Doon Road House or near by. I am told I will have communication problems so you will have to bear with me

Distance to Date:- 6727.90 Km
Start:- Saddle Creek Rest Area
Finish:- Kimberleyland Holiday Park - Kununarra
Comment:- Last night I had tea about 6pm then was invited to join three other couples who were travelling together. About 8.30pm I excused myself and went to bed.
Up at 6am and on the road by 7am. Beautiful cool morning, good road with little to no traffic. There are a few cattle wandering on the road early in the day.
A number of caravans are travelling through early. I have heard that the caravan parks up ahead are all full and vans are lining up from 7am in the hope of getting a powered site.
A southerly breeze of 5 - 10 knot has set in about mid morning and swung to the south east latter in the morning. Stopped for a break about 50km out about 10.30pm
Stopped at the monument for the Beef Road, but as per a lot of things around here vandalism has taken its toll. Someone has removed the plaque so I wont know what it represents.
Crossed into Western Australia about 11.30am Northern Territory time. Passed through the Quarantine Station with questions only . No worries. On the way to Kununarra.
A few hills to contend with on the way and then a nice downhill run into town. Very nice. Found a caravan park, booked in and did the usuals then into town and a Coles Supermarket and bought my meals for the next couple of days and a few things for when I am back on the road.
Tomorrow is a Rest Day.
Day 123
Date:- 15 July 2010
Distance:- 116.57 Km
Distance to Date:- 6616.8 Km
Start:- Timber Creek Caravan Park
Finish:- Saddle creek Rest Area
Comment:- I have had a day I would like to forget, now I have a town I would like to forget.
I arrived at Timber Creek, thinking there was only one caravan park but latter found there were two. I booked in found a nice spot and put the tent up. Had a shower and then wandered down the street. Found a super market and down the side was another caravan park. I asked how much and it was half the price of where I was.
I decided to eat out. Counter meals were on at the hotel. Orders were taken and paid for in cash upstairs at the hotel. I don’t carry much cash for obvious reasons, so I had to place my order downstairs where they can accept credit cards. The girl who did the transaction apparently didn’t order my meal. After about three quarters of an hours wait I enquired about my meal and was told it was next. Another half an hour latter and still no meal I enquired again only to find there was no written order. I finally got my meal but no chips or salad when it stated on the menu all meals come with salad and chips.
Complained again only to be told mixed grills do not come with chips and salad. I voiced my disappointment and departed.
Back to the caravan park and charged all the batteries before retiring to bed. Listened to the radio then fell asleep. Woke up about 11.30pm and could hear voices and as it turned out some young people were celebrating at the pub over the front fence. They carried on till about 3am with no regard to patrons of the caravan park. On top of that the noise from the colony of fruit bats resident over the creek was evident as well. Consequently I got very little sleep. I forgot to mention some caravans were running their air conditioners as well. It was a warm night.
I was up at 5am, had breakfast, packed and on the road by 6am. With all lights blazing and still very dark, I had made about 15km before there was enough light to read my bike computer. The country side slowly came to life as the sun rose. Stopped about 35km out for the first of two breaks I had promised myself.
Spotted my first boab tree just out of Timber Creek.
Next door campers from Timber Creek Caravan Park, Robin and his wife pulled up along side for a quick chat. They are off to Derby, Cape Leveaque then the Gibb River road.
Arrived at East Baines Rest Area about 9.45am and had already decided to head for Saddle Creek Rest Area. Had my second break about 10.45am about 70km out from Timber Creek, then had a nice little run into Saddle Creek. arriving about 1.30 pm. Already quite a few vans in here, but found a spot and quickly put my tent up and settled in.
Tomorrow I hope to make Kununurra a distance of 110km.

Day 122
Date:- 14 July 2010
Distance:- 89.81 Km
Distance to Date:- 6500.20 Km
Start:- Victoria River Road House Caravan Park
Finish:- Timber Creek Caravan Park
Comment:- Last night I had tea in the café and sat outside till about 8.30pm. Still very warm. In bed and listened to the radio for a while.
I had a reasonable sleep last night, up at 6.15am, packed and had breakfast and on the road by 7.30am. Road was winding through the hills with the sun behind me, it was highlighting all the rocky outcrops. Very stunning.
Had a kangaroo hop over the road in front of me and I didn’t hit it. In fact there were quite a few roos grazing along the side of the road. Rode past Joes Creek Rest Area, didn’t go in because it is 2 km off the road.
A nice south east breeze started to come in about 9.30am as the road still winds through the hills (The Stokes Ranges). Stopped on the side of the road in some shade and had my break
Rode past the Kuwang Lookout, didn’t go in as it was closed for maintenance. From there it was a very pleasant downhill run into Timber Creek.
Arrived in Timber Creek about 1.15pm, booked in, set up then wandered around the small township. Bought a couple of oranges and tomorrow nights tea.
Tomorrow I hope to ride to East Baines River Rest Area (67Km) and if I feel ok and time is on my side I will keep going to Saddle Creek (117Km).
Day 121
Date:- 13 July 2010
Distance:- 91.48 Km
Distance to Date:- 6410.4 Km
Start:- Mathison Rest Area
Finish:- Victoria River Road House Caravan Park
Comment:- After tea last night I got talking to my next door campers, Nowjab (sorry if I got the name wrong) and Briony who offered me a couple of glasses of red wine while we chatted the night away. In bed by 9.45pm and had a very good nights sleep, so good, I slept right through to 6.30am. I was going to get up by 5.30am for an early start.
Up 6.30am, breakfast, packed and on the road by 6.45am. Beautiful morning, birds chattering, no wind, sun just rising and fresh fragrant smells, then “POW”, a silver bullet (motor car) shattered the peace.
Upset some cattle grazing on the side of the road. Not worried about cars or trucks but took off when I came along. I upset a couple of kangaroos a bit further down the road.
Passed the turn off for Top Springs then stopped at the Buntine Monument commemorating the opening of the Buntine Highway.
The road is more undulating now as it winds it way through the hills and we enter Gregory National Park.
Came up over the first hill and it was just like a theatre curtain opening. The panorama that met me was magnificent A pleasant north easterly breeze had come, in which added to the nice day.
Arrived at Victoria River Road House about 1.30pm, had a bite to eat and a free coffee. A couple from Nowra came up to me inquiring about what I was up to. They had done a lot of long distance riding around Australia mainly off-road stuff pulling BOB trailers. It was quite interesting talking to them. They departed and I went to set up my tent, have a shower and generally relax. Its about 34’ here at the moment.
Tomorrow I will set off for Timber Creek.

Day 120
Date:- 12 July 2010
Distance:- 99.21 Km
Distance to Date:- 6318.36 Km
Start:- Riverview Caravan Park - Katherine
Finish:- Mathison Rest Area (153)
Comment:- Last night I cooked tea about 6pm, washed up and into bed by 8.30pm. Quite uncomfortable in the tent (Temp. 24’ at 9.30pm) Received a welcome phone call from Ian, then listened to the radio before falling asleep.
Woke up about 5.15am and decided to get up about 5.30am, had breakfast, packed up and on the road by 6.45am (Temp 18’) No wind at this stage. I will be now heading in a south westerly direction today.
About 2 km out of Katherine a car and caravan pulled up along side me and it was the people who had given me a lift back to the caravan park. Had a quick chat on the move before they headed off to Broome I think. Quite pleasant on the road this morning. Most caravans are probably getting up and organised about 7.30am
I feel great after my rest day yesterday.
Into the King River Rest Area to check it out. Good for caravans. Road was gently undulating but nothing to worry about at this stage. Caravans starting to move past me about 8.45am
Pulled into the Vince Connoly Rest Area for my break. Heiner, who is travelling in a campervan came over for a chat so I asked him for some hot water. His wife, Martha put the kettle on and I enjoyed a nice cup of tea.
Out on the road again and about 63 km out I pulled over to the side of the road to let three road trains past and a campervan stopped to check on me. It was Tony and Pam from Geelong who I had met in Banka Banka. They had been in Katherine Gorge for a few days and else where.
Tony informed me that Peter Walker had passed away. Peter was Production Manager at E.P.Robinson while I was there and retired about 2 years ago I think. Peter was one of natures gentlemen and will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.
An easterly wind was filling in and gave me some much needed assistance. I arrived at my destination - Mathison Rest Area about 1.30pm and quickly found a site and set up my tent. While I was setting up Jack and Wilma came over. I had met them at the Barkly Homestead. Jack offered me a 4X beer which was icy cold. It was very nice.
I was half way through writing my diary when I hit the wrong button and lost the lot, so this is my second attempt. It is being saved now.
I enjoyed another beer with Jack and Wilma - “happy hour” before cooking and having tea. It is still quite warm at 7pm (I reckon about 28’)
Tomorrow I hope to make Victoria River Road House about 93 km from here.

Day 119
Date:- 11 July 2010
Distance:- 0 Km
Distance to Date:- 6219.6 Km
Start:- Riverview Motel & Caravan Park
Finish:- Riverview Motel & Caravan Park
Comment:- Last night I had tea in the café then wandered around the caravan park. Garry and Cheryl, who I met in Mataranka, rang and said they would like to drop in to see me in the morning at the caravan park. I then went to bed. At 10.30pm last night it was still 24 degrees.
Had a good nights sleep awaking about 7am, up and beat the ladies to the washing machines, but only just. Got the washing hung out then a nice leisurely breakfast. Checked over the bike and trailer and that tube. Again another of those fancy patches had failed me. The only reason I can see why it failed was, while I was on then bike path I crossed a road and both the entry and exits were quite steep. I hit them quite hard hence increasing the pressure in the tube and was too much for the patch.
Garry and Cheryl arrived while I was answering a couple of Emails. Showed them a few pictures then down to my camp site and showed them the bike, then we wandered around the park. I asked them for a lift into town, once there, we said our cheerio’s and on our separate ways. Hope to catch up with them in Perth.
I went to Woolies and bought up some provisions and was wondering how I was going to get back to the park when I recognised someone from a previous park. They were staying at a different park but passed my park on the way to theirs. Any chance of a lift? No worries.
Back in camp I packed my purchases, had some lunch then retrieved my washing and packed that up as well. Then a fright for the system, bathers on and down to the thermal springs for a dip. It was very nice as the forecast temperature of 34 degrees was reached and the temperature of the springs a constant 24 degrees. I stayed in the water for about an hour. Very relaxing and I am sure therapeutic.
Answering a couple more Emails then my diary and if I have time another dip in the springs.
Tomorrow I will head for the Mathison Rest Area about 103 km west of Katherine on the Victoria Highway. Hopefully an early start to avoid the hot weather.

Day 118
Date:- 10 July 2010
Distance:- 108.26 Km
Distance to Date:- 6219.6 Km
Start:- Territory Manor Mote - Mataranka
Finish:- Riverview Motel & Caravan Park
Comment:- Wandered around the park before tea. It was fully booked out. Had a nice tea in their restaurant and latter was invited to join Garry and Cheryl from Perth. They had flown to Darwin, hired a car and are driving around the top end for a few days.
I was in bed by 9.30pm and had a very good nights sleep. Up at 7am, packed, had breakfast and on the road by 8.30am. Light easterly breeze, clear sky, just another day in paradise.
Stopped at Rest Area (97) to check it out. Toilets (no paper), water and shelter. A big area and seems very popular. Had a cup of tea and an orange for my break.
About 70 km out from Mataranka a caravan stopped ahead of me and hailed me to stop. He was concerned about my visibility on the road and gave me an orange Hi Vis jacket to put on, which I did. I do appreciate it when people show their concern like that. Thank you.
Rode past the turn off to Cutta Cutta Caves National Park. Seems very popular judging by the number of cars that have turned off in front of me.
Down the road and past the Tindal Air Force Base and 15 km to Katherine. About 8 km out of Katherine there was a sign pointing to a bike path. Onto the path I went. It ran parallel to the road and was in better condition than the road. About 6 km down the path I felt something funny with the bike, low and behold a flat tyre on BOB. How annoying. Removed the wheel stripped it down and couldn’t find anything in the tyre, so I put a new tube in and put everything back together and set off to find the caravan park which was about 3 km down Victoria Highway. A No Vacancy sign was out but I still went in to enquire as to accommodation further down the road only to be told they can squeeze me. Thank goodness.
I was shown to a nice grassy and shady area which will suit me fine. Joyce, a traveller who I met at the front gate of the park and was aware of my demise came over and gave me an icy cold Bundeberg Ginger Beer.
Tomorrow is a rest day to do the washing, catching up on Emails, check over the bike and that tube. Down to Woolies to get some provisions and if time allows a dip in the thermal springs which are just over the back of the park.

Distance:- 74.96 Km
Distance to Date:- 6111.3 Km
Start:- Larrimah Wayside Inn Caravan Park
Finish:- Territory Manor Mote - Mataranka
Comment:- After tea last night I repaired the broken spoke in the rear wheel. Spoke to a gentleman from Perth about alternative routes around Perth. I then had a couple of cups of tea before retiring to bed about 10.30pm. A rather long day.
The Pink Panther Hotel complex was filled with memorabilia and a small menagerie of birds and animals Quite an interesting place
Had a really good nights sleep. Up about 7.15am, had breakfast, packed, talked and finally on the road by 9am. Lazy start. A little cloud cover and a light SE breeze.
About 3km out of Larrimah I looked up to see a car and caravan over taking another car and caravan. He obviously didn’t see me (or I hope to think so), tooting madly, I dived for the gravel.
About 7 km down the road I heard a road train coming up behind me. No oncoming traffic so I knew the truck driver would move to the right hand lane. I was wrong, a couple of toots on his horn and again I dived for the gravel. Another smaller truck had decided to over take the road train.
There were small patches of purple and pink wild flowers along the side of the road. Stopped at a Rest Area (79) About 37 km from Larrimah. There were toilets, water and shelter. The Army was on the move again today, this time heading south. A lot of what I think is waste control burning was evident along the right hand side of the road. Some logs were still smouldering.
A slow steady climb into Mataranka, through the little township and found a caravan park. Always as I am setting up camp someone comes up for a chat. It is starting to annoy me. Nice shady grassy area Set everything up wandered around the park then did my diary.
I would like to thank all those people who are taking the time to make comment on my blog. It makes it all worth while.

Distance to Date:- 6036.3 Km
Start:- Shell Dunmarra Wayside Inn C/P
Finish:- Larrimah Wayside Inn Caravan Park
Comment:- On completion of my diary yesterday, I charged all my batteries - computer, phone and camera. I then wandered over to the café to enjoy a free coffee/tea they offer. I then had a look around the compound where I saw some buffalo. Spoke to various travellers before going to the café for tea. I then watched TV for a while before retiring to bed.
The caravan park had set up an out door television so anyone who was interested could watch the State of Origin football match between Queensland and New South Wales. I could listen to the commentary from my tent. Had a good sleep.
Up about 6am, packed and had breakfast and on the road by 7.30am. Cool overcast day to start and a very light SE breeze. About 30 km out the cloud started to disperse and the sun was out.
Stopped at Daly Waters Roadside Inn. No fruit, but I had another free tea. Had mobile reception so a quick call to Evon to tell I was alright and what I was planning. As it was only 10.30am I decided to go through to Larrimah.
Stopped and chatted to a couple of cyclists heading south. David and Meredith from Canberra. David was on a Two Wheeled Recumbent and Meredith on a Hybrid. We traded info back and forth. I must thank them for their kind donation.
Had my break about 65km out at about 12.30pm. A cloudless sky and a light SE wind, good road and light traffic. Mainly single cars and a couple of trucks.
I turned over 6000 km, and as my total journey is 14000 km I am nearly half way. I will soon be on the way home dear.
Met another couple of cyclists from Alice Springs. They had cycled up to Litchfield National Park and were now on their way home. That was about 15 km out from Larrimah. About 5km out of Larrimah another couple of cyclists. They were from Germany and travelling from Darwin, down to 3 Ways, across to Townsville and then to Cairns and home.
Arrived at Larrimah about 5pm, found the park, booked in, etc. Had tea at the pub while doing my diary. I have to replace another broken spoke in the rear wheel either tonight or before I set off tomorrow.
Mataranka is the destination tomorrow and I may even try out the thermal pools.
Day 115

Distance:- 100.07 Km
Distance to Date:- 5901.1 Km
Start:- Elliot Mobil Van Park
Finish:- Shell Dunmarra Wayside Inn C/P
Comment:- On the completion of my diary about 4.30pm I wandered down to the hotel.Spoke to a couple of motor cyclists who had come down from Katherine. They were hoping to go further but the dark clouds persuaded them to stay at Elliot and in the same park as me.
Had a nice counter meal, watched some telly to get an idea what the weather had in store for me and it didn’t look too bad. Back to the caravan park and retired for the night. Awoke about 1amwhen I heard someone walking around. It may have been someone going to the toilet. it’s the first time I haven’t locked the bike up. So I got up and locked it up and back to bed.
Awoke again about 6am, got up, packed and ready to go. Had to wait for the office to open to return the key and get my deposit back. Had a cooked breakfast and a cup of tea and then, on the road by 7.30am
Heavy cloud cover and a light misty rain for the first 20 km but not too bad. A good road and medium traffic, including a couple of trucks. Not a breath of wind at this stage. Hoping my SE wind fills in shortly.
Stopped at Newcastle Waters Rest Area to check it out - not too bad. It was about 22km out of Elliot. Clouds seem to be lifting and the sun is trying to poke through. Stopped for my break about 11am 50km out from Elliot.
The rain over the last couple of days has made all the colours more vibrant. The rich reds, browns and yellows and the healthy greens all lapping up the moisture.
About 30 km out from Dunmarra the sun is shining and I am warming up, time to start removing some wet weather clothing. Its turning out to be a very nice day.
Arrived at Dunmurra and booked into the caravan park. Very nice and clean little park and very popular. Had a meat pie and a free coffee for lunch, then a nice hot shower before doing my diary. No mobile phone coverage here.
Not quite sure what my plan of attack for the next few days but Katherine is my objective by next Sunday.

Date:- 6 July 2010
Distance:- 91.48 Km
Distance to Date:- 5801.0 Km
Start:- Renner Springs Caravan Park
Finish:- Elliot Mobil Van Park
Comment:- Yesterday afternoon I walked around the Lake Walk then up onto the main road then back to the park. Then wandered around the caravan park chatting to different people. I then went to the café and settled in and read last Saturdays paper. Had tea and watched the news and weather on TV. There was a threat of rain overnight and through the next day. Wonderful, I might get wet tomorrow. I then retired to bed for the night.
Had a restless night, listening for the rain. Good tent site out of the wind but right next door to the pump shed, with water pressure units switching on and off through the night. The resident geese were being upset at various times and they also added to the symphony. Got the ear plugs out and that fixed that problem.
Decided to get up at 7am. Heard a couple of drops of rain on the tent about 6.30am so out of bed and packed up in record time. Result was no wet tent.
Over to the café for a cooked breakfast. Three snags, three pieces of bacon three hash browns and toast for $10. Not to bad, plus a free cup of coffee. While I was having breakfast a steady light rain started to fall. I decided to sit it out. Seemed to moderate about 8.30am so off I went.
There was light drizzle for about the first 10 km and then stopped and I ended up having a clear run all the way to Elliot where, on arrival it started raining and in earnest.
Good road all the way with light traffic. The road headed North West with a 10 -15 knot SE wind. A convoy of Army vehicles passed me heading North. And an escorted truck was heading south. There was a massive piece of machinery on a multi wheeled trailer being pulled by two prime movers and pushed by another. Three escort vehicles and two police cars ensuring safe passage. By the time I stopped and got my camera out they were gone.
About 10 km out of Elliot I was surrounded by dark black sky and I thought any time now I am going to get drenched but it held off till I made Elliot as I said earlier.
Two caravan parks in Elliot. Neither seemed inviting. Chose the Mobil one booked in and then endeavoured to find a dry spot to put the tent up. I am on top of a septic tank, under a carport. Looks quite comfortable and hopefully it is only for the night.
Tomorrow I want to get to Dunmarra which is 103km from here.
Day 113
Date:- 5 July 2010
Distance:- 58.76 Km
Distance to Date:- 5709.5 Km
Start:- Banka Banka Station Caravan Park
Finish:- Renner Springs Caravan Park
Comment:- Last night I wandered over to where Tony and Pam were camped and joined them. Tony had his old diary out and read extracts from it, about the time when he rode his bike around Australia. It was 17 years ago and the conditions were certainly rougher than I have had to endure. Tony and I then went over to the Kiosk were we continued our chat over a couple of beers. I then walked up to the Lookout and what a view.
About 6.30pm the management put on a slide show and commentary about the history of the station and it was quite interesting.
I then cooked my tea in the Camp Kitchen, had a cup of tea, cleaned up and then retired to bed for the night. I had a good nights sleep. Got up about 6.30am, had breakfast, packed, said good bye to Tony and Pam and on the road by 8am.
Tony and Pam passed me about 15 km from Banka Banka on their way to Daly Waters.
I stopped for my break about 30 km out, about 10am. Quite a few caravans on the road heading both ways and only two trucks. Very good road, overcast skies and, as Tony said, an influencing wind.
Rode through the Ashburton Ranges, a lot of burnt country to the east of the highway. Whether it was a waste reduction burn or a bush fire, I don’t know. Road was quite undulating through the ranges. One hill, in particular needed special attention. The rich red and golden yellow colours of the surrounding scenery was evidence of the beauty of this area.
Had a nice downhill run out of the ranges and about 7 km to Renner Springs. Stock holding yards were visible on the way into Renner Springs on both sides of the road. Arrived at the Renner Springs Road House about 12.30pm. Booked into the Caravan Park, set up camp, had a shower. As there was no mobile coverage I phoned Evon, reverse charges, to let her know I was OK. Then I did my diary in the dining room of the road house.
While I was doing my diary we had a heavy shower of rain which should settle the dust. I am glad to be off the road.
Tomorrow I have a big day. Heading for Elliot which is about 90 km from here.

Finish:- Banka Banka Station Caravan Park
Comment:- Awoken about 5.45am this morning by early departures. These people arrived late last night, made a lot of noise setting up and just as much noise packing up, plus they camped right on my doorstep. I must be lucky.
Despite all the noise I did have a very good sleep. I crawled out of bed about 6.45am, packed up and over to the café for a cooked breakfast. I was on the road by 8.45am after chatting to different people. I would like 5 cents for every minute I tell people about my journey. I reckon it would pay for the trip.
A good road leading generally NW with a SE breeze of 5 - 10 knots. In other words a tail wind again. A few clouds around, the sun is shining but still a little cool It was more comfortable as the day wore on.
A few more cars and trucks on the Stuart Highway which is to be expected. The road is gently rising and falling . Stopped for my break about 11am, 35 km out from 3 ways.
Rode through the picturesque Short Ranges, then stopped at Attack Creek Rest Area to check that out. Quite a nice big area with toilets, water, shelter and BBQ. The Whittington Ranges were then crossed and ended with a very nice downhill run. The road then flattened out with about a 10km run into Banka Banka.
Got to Banka Banka and as I was entering the gate someone was taking my photo. It turned out to be Tony Spark an old workmate from Geelong. Tony and his wife Pam are travelling around our lovely country. No doubt we will enjoy a beer together before the night is out.
I would like to thank the management of Banka Banka for waiving the camping fee. It was very much appreciated.
Set up tent and then, you guessed it, off to have a nice hot shower before doing my diary. No mobile phone coverage.
Tomorrow I hope to travel to Renner Springs, a distance of about 60 km.

Day 111
Date:- 3 July 2010
Distance:- 70.47 Km
Distance to Date:- 5573.9 Km
Start:- 41 Mile Bore Rest Area
Finish:- Three Ways Roadhouse Caravan Park
Comment:- Cooked and ate tea about 6pm, washed up and into bed about 7pm. Read for a while then did a Sudoku puzzle then off to sleep. Very windy night and cold. Got up at one stage to check the tent pegs and found them OK.
It was hard to get up this morning, still cold and very windy. Had breakfast and packed up with the hindrance of the wind. I was on the road by 8am.
I have a sore left knee. I don’t know whether it was because I pushed a bit hard yesterday or what. Just below the knee cap on the inside. No pain at the moment but once I start peddling it hurts a bit so will try to take it a bit easier today.
Its overcast, like yesterday, but a stronger SE wind, about 15 - 20 knots and gusting to 25 knots. As I am heading roughly WSW, then SW, I should get some assistance through the day. Sun is trying to shine from time to time.
They have plenty of long straight roads up here and you can see ahead for miles. About 30km out from the rest area the road swung SW hence I now have a side wind to contend with. Stopped for my break about 10.30am about 35km out.
About 45km out the road swung west again and I had a tail wind to take me into Three Ways Roadhouse.
Booked into the Caravan Park and you know the rest. Tent, shave and shower. Spoke to a number of people in the park before settling down to do my diary.
Tomorrow I will head for Banka Banka Station which is 74 km north of Three Ways along the Stuart Highway.
Day 110
Date:- 2 July 2010
Distance:- 115.62 Km
Distance to Date:- 5503.5 Km
Start:- Barkly Homestead Caravan Park
Finish:- 41 Mile Bore
Comment:- Last night I enjoyed a nice steak, salad and chips, Watched some TV before retiring to bed. It started raining lightly as I was coming back from the toilet and continued for some time. It had been threatening all day.
I was up at 7am after a good nights sleep. Quite a bit of rain overnight as was evident from the pools of water everywhere. Had a shave and shower then breakfast before packing up. Down to the Caravan Office to retrieve my key deposit. And had a cup of tea and toast and jam.
On the road by 8.30am. Heavy overcast morning with a SE wind of about 5 - 10 knots gusting to 15 at times. A very good road and light traffic as seems to be the norm.
The Barkly Homestead Complex seems to be a little goldmine with people coming and going all day The price of most things where a little higher than normal but to be expected. Petrol was $1.87 a litre and diesel was $1.84 a litre. A sign on the door says please don’t take offence at the cost of things as we generate our own power which costs about $500 a day as well as transport of goods in.
There were puddles of water on the road resulting from the overnight rain. Clouds are slowly burning off and the sun is trying to come out, but the wind keeps on blowing.
I arrived at Frewena Rest Area about 11.30am. Decided to have my break here and keep going to 41 mile Bore. I was travelling NW most of the day which meant I had the wind behind me almost all the way to 41 Mile Bore. For the 115 km I averaged 20.4 Kilometres an hour. I was quite happy with that.
I arrived at 41 mile Bore about 3.15pm, found a spot and pitched the tent etc, made a coffee for myself and completed my diary
Again no phone coverage. Tomorrow I hope to make Three Ways on the Stuart Highway. I will have covered the entire length of the Barkly Highway and its been a very good run.

Distance:- 0 Km
Distance to Date:- 5387.8 Km
Start:- Barkly Homestead
Finish:- Barkly Homestead
Comment:- Last night I had a nice counter meal, made a couple of phone calls and then watched some TV before retiring to bed about 9.30pm.
Had a good nights sleep and slept in till 7.45am. Got up to a very overcast and windy day. Put my tracky dacks and jumper on for the first time in quite some time.
Had breakfast then wandered around the park watching various vans pack up and leave. By 10.30am there was only two vans plus me left in the park. About 11.45am the first van pulled in then there was a continuous parade coming in.
I then started to work on the bike and trailer cleaning and oiling etc. Removed the rear wheel in a hope I could repair the broken spoke. With a bit of ingenuity I was able to extract the remains of the broken spoke and presto the new spoke was fixed.
I finished playing with the bike, cleaned up and then answered a few Emails and checked my route for the next few days. It seems I will be out of phone range again till I reach Three Ways on the Stuart Highway.
Through the afternoon I wandered here and there, read a couple of 4 X 4 magazines someone had offered me and did a Sudoku puzzle.
Will go and enjoy another counter meal, ring home and maybe watch a bit of Telly before retiring.
Hope to go to the Frewena Rest Area but if it is wet in the morning I will prop here till it clears. There is no shelter at the next two rest areas.
