Day 114

Date:- 6 July 2010
Distance:- 91.48 Km
Distance to Date:- 5801.0 Km
Start:- Renner Springs Caravan Park
Finish:- Elliot Mobil Van Park
Comment:- Yesterday afternoon I walked around the Lake Walk then up onto the main road then back to the park. Then wandered around the caravan park chatting to different people. I then went to the café and settled in and read last Saturdays paper. Had tea and watched the news and weather on TV. There was a threat of rain overnight and through the next day. Wonderful, I might get wet tomorrow. I then retired to bed for the night.

Had a restless night, listening for the rain. Good tent site out of the wind but right next door to the pump shed, with water pressure units switching on and off through the night. The resident geese were being upset at various times and they also added to the symphony. Got the ear plugs out and that fixed that problem.

Decided to get up at 7am. Heard a couple of drops of rain on the tent about 6.30am so out of bed and packed up in record time. Result was no wet tent.

Over to the café for a cooked breakfast. Three snags, three pieces of bacon three hash browns and toast for $10. Not to bad, plus a free cup of coffee. While I was having breakfast a steady light rain started to fall. I decided to sit it out. Seemed to moderate about 8.30am so off I went.

There was light drizzle for about the first 10 km and then stopped and I ended up having a clear run all the way to Elliot where, on arrival it started raining and in earnest.

Good road all the way with light traffic. The road headed North West with a 10 -15 knot SE wind. A convoy of Army vehicles passed me heading North. And an escorted truck was heading south. There was a massive piece of machinery on a multi wheeled trailer being pulled by two prime movers and pushed by another. Three escort vehicles and two police cars ensuring safe passage. By the time I stopped and got my camera out they were gone.

About 10 km out of Elliot I was surrounded by dark black sky and I thought any time now I am going to get drenched but it held off till I made Elliot as I said earlier.

Two caravan parks in Elliot. Neither seemed inviting. Chose the Mobil one booked in and then endeavoured to find a dry spot to put the tent up. I am on top of a septic tank, under a carport. Looks quite comfortable and hopefully it is only for the night.

Tomorrow I want to get to Dunmarra which is 103km from here.

  1. I guess by the fact you have not mentioned it again that your knee has been OK the last few days. When I look at the map of Australia at the top of your blog that heavy black line looks very impressive. The weather down here has stopped me riding thew last few weeks, but managed to get out for a 40km ride Sunday. Hwever no trailer to tow for me. Keep up the good effort and watch out for the road trains. Regards Andrew A

  2. Geoff I missed you daily round up when you lost coverage. Wasn't sure were you had got to. Hopefully the wet weather will clear for you and perhaps it will begin to WARM UP as you get closer to Katherine. As Andrew said the black line you Australia map is starting to look most impressive. Keep up the good work as its too cold and wet for riding in Geelong.
    Regards Stuart and Jill

  3. Geoff,

we're on holiday in Greece (Elliott is home from boarding school at the moment) but I'm still keen to find a computer with an Internet connection so that I can keep up on your travels.

You are not going to be able to avoid that wet stuff every day but at least it should be warmer up north than down south.

    Keep the updates coming,

    Don.
