Day 47
Date:- 30 April 2010
Distance:- 84.25 Km
Distance to Date:- 2369.7 Km
Start:- North Lakes
Finish:- Nambour Rainforest Holiday Village
Comment:- Awoke and up at 6am. Packed and ready to hit the road.
I must thank Nathan and Tania for their kind hospitality, specially when one of the children was suffering from a sore throat and the other demanding equal attention.
On the road by 7am and with the directions Nathan gave me I was back to the Bruce Highway, only to find the “NO BIKES” sign again.
I kept riding into the town of Kallangur and asked for directions to Caboolture. Continue down the road I was on for about five sets of traffic lights and you should come to Old Gympie road. Turn right and just follow it.
I found Old Gympie road and rode through towns of Petrie, Dakabin and onto Burpengary. I was now in sight of the Bruce Highway again.
At the intersection of Old Gympie Road and Deception Bay Road was a turn off for the Bruce Highway and another one of those signs, except these signs didn’t say no bicycles. I couldn’t get over there quick enough. Sure enough another sign further down the road confirmed the fact I was allowed on the highway. I was quite happy now.
About 3 or 4 km down the highway was a service centre where I stopped for my snack break and a cold drink.
I was now travelling at 20 to 25 km per hour and I felt on top of the world. Good road, sun shining and a nice tail wind. The only offset was the traffic. it’s a long weekend in Queensland so the holiday makers were out in force. There is a lot of tree farming between Caboolture and Nambour, mainly pine trees. Quite a few sports yachts were heading north whether they had championships on or what, I don’t know. There were quite a few other trailer sailors on the road as well.
I stopped at the Ettamoga Pub Complex at Palmview for lunch. Had a nice curry pie and a 500 ml of chocolate milk then down to the pub for a beer. Very nice.
Back on the road and heading for Nambour about 30 km down the road. Turned off the Bruce Highway towards Nambour and came to the Big Pineapple were they had an Info Office. Two caravan parks are close handy I was told.
The first park was closed for renovations and the second one was nearly into Nambour. I booked into the second one naturally. At $26 is still a bit steep for an unpowered tent site for one person. Makes for an expensive shower.
Tomorrow I hope to get to Gympie or beyond.

Day 46
Date:- 29 April 2010
Distance:- 0 Km
Distance to Date:- 2285.40 Km
Start:- North Lakes
Finish:- North Lakes
Comment:- Rest Day today. I had a very good nights sleep in a nice comfortable bed. Woke about 6.30am and up about 7am. Had breakfast then folded my washing.
Cleaned and oiled my bike checked over my gear and repacked the trailer. Everything looked ok.
Tania ran me to their local shopping centre where I spent a few hours just wandering around. Did some shopping, had lunch and some more browsing before calling Nathan to pick me up.
Spent the rest of the day just lazing around. Roughly planning the next few days and so forth.
Hope to get somewhere near Nambour tomorrow night.

Day 45
Date:- 28 April 2010
Distance:- 52.85 Km
Distance to Date:- 2285.40 Km
Start:- Broadwater Tourist Park
Finish:- North Lakes (Nathan & Tania)
Comment:- Out for tea last night, then a walk around the park, then into bed by 9.30am.
I must thank Glen and Lyn for organising my next nights accommodation in North Lakes with their son and daughter in law, Nathan and Tania, their two children and two dogs.
I phoned Nathan last night to touch base and organise a rendezvous in Brisbane. I will ring Nathan at 1.30pm tomorrow.
Breakfast at McDonalds ( I cant help myself) then on the road by 7.45am. The Gold coast Highway, to Marine Parade, through Runaway Bay, Hollywell, Hope Island and then Oxenford, where we turned north to head for Coomera.
The bike lane lead onto the M1 highway and I thought you beauty express to Brisbane. But then the sign appeared “No Bikes on freeway” My hopes were dashed. Back into Coomera and go to Pimpama. I was trying to stay in sight of the M1 as I headed north.
The next little town was Ormeau where I had a snack break before tackling the hills again. Yatala, Beenleigh then Loganholme. I was on a bike path, then a road, back to a path in fact all over the place but as long as I kept heading north I was right.
At Loganholme I sought help from the local RACQ on how to get into the city. They were most helpful and gave me a full map of the area.
After a cold drink at a nearby café I was set to go again when the phone rang. It was Nathan and, was I glad to hear from him. He went out of his way to pick me up and take me to his house in North Lakes.
Were I met the rest of the family. After a nice shower and a decent towel to dry with, we dealt with my washing and hung it out to dry.
I have put the bike back together, made a couple of simple repairs and finally relaxing.
It is good knowing Brisbane is now behind me. I may have a rest day tomorrow although I don’t want to wear out my welcome and their generosity.

Day 44
Date:- 27 April 2010
Distance:- 68.42 Km
Distance to Date:- 2229.4 Km
Start:- Sleepy Hollow Rest Area
Finish:- Broadwater Tourist Park
Comment:- In bed by 7.30pm last night. It was a bit cool and something wanted to bite me. The best place was bed
Had a phone call from Ian Cations last night. It was nice to hear another familiar voice.
Up at 6am after another good nights sleep. It must be the fresh air or maybe all the exercise. There were 4 cars parked here this morning so I did have company.
Before I went to bed last night 2 car loads of young people turned up. They got out of the cars, put a CD on and started to dance. Zorba the Greek and similar dances. It was refreshing watching the young ones enjoying themselves, no alcohol, no bad language. After about an hour they got in their cars and left.
On the road by 9am and the first sign I saw was for the next rest areas, Chinderan at 21 km and Coomera at 76 Km. There are bridges over the highway for the wildlife to cross the road without having to dodge traffic and coming off second best. I think there are 4 of these bridges in the area.
Travelling towards Tweed Heads I saw a sign which read Brisbane Turn left. I turned left and ended up on the M1 motorway. After about 5km a sign appeared saying pedestrians, animals, cyclists and a couple of other items were prohibited from travelling on the M1. I took the next exit which lead to Tweed Heads. A little detour but not too bad.
I headed for the beach area expecting to find some bike paths which there were. So I followed these north along the beach but occasionally had to get back on the road to go over a bridge, or go round a building or two. On the map I had it showed a caravan park close by at Biggera Waters. Found the park, booked in, complained about the $35 for an unpowered tent site but I wasn’t about to go any further. Tent up, showered and shaved and doing my diary.
Tomorrow will be a difficult day. As bikes are not allowed on the M1, I will have to weave my way to Brisbane on bike paths and service roads and maybe some ignorance. Could be interesting. I would like to get right through Brisbane tomorrow then have a rest day.

Day 43
Date:- 26 April 2010
Distance:- 65.75 Km
Distance to Date:- 2160.9 Km
Start:- Ballina
Finish:- Sleepy Hollow Rest Area
Comment:- Up at 6am and on the road by 7.15am. I must thank Nikki for the ability to spread out and enjoy a good nights sleep. Walked down to the RSL Club for tea. I can highly recommend the lamb roast.
I have opted to follow the coast road initially to avoid the Ballina bypass road works There were a number of hills I had to contend with between Ballina and Byron Bay. At this stage sun was shining and that nice tail wind to help me over the hills. Coastal showers were forecast but didn’t eventuate thankfully, although we did get a cloud burst in Ballina overnight.
Pulled into Pat Morten Lookout, before heading off to Lennox Hear. A camera cannot do justice to the scenery I am experiencing. Through Lennox Head and I made a left turn into Ross Lane which took me back to the Pacific Highway just after the road works finished. Good planning I guess.
Stopped at the Macadamia Castle for my morning snack break. Back on the road and the tail wind had picked up 10 - 15 knots and gusting to 20 at times. I need a little bit more than that to get me over some of these hills.
After Byron Bay the highway was beautifully flat. I was able to average 22 km an hour - not bad for the load I am carrying.
Stopped at the Yelgun Rest Area where a Driver Reviver caravan was set up. Had a couple of cuppas and some cordial and cold water. Very nice.
Back on the road heading for the Sleepy Hollow Rest Area where I will stay the night. I believe it is about 50 km south of Tweed Heads. Next couple of days will be interesting as I work my way through the Gold Coast then Brisbane.

Day 42
Date:- 25 April 2010
Distance:- 57.45 Km
Distance to Date:- 2095.1 Km
Start:- Tabbimobile Rest Area
Finish:- Ballina (Nikki Foord)
Comment:- Bit of a rough night last night. Cars coming and going. They would see the toilet, didn’t like it, and kept going, something changed their mind. I was awoken at 11.30pm by someone trying to start his car. He had stopped for a toilet break but the car had stopped, period. He finally rang the NRMA who enquired of his whereabouts. “I don’t know, some rest area in the national park on the Pacific Highway” I could sense the frustration, crawled out of bed and informed the man where he was. He was quite appreciative and I went back to bed.
Up at 7am this morning and away by 9am. A short trip into New Italy were I had a cuppa and a chat with various people. I must make a press release to read I started in Geelong and I am heading for Cairns or further I have had 1 flat tyre, etc. I don’t mind the chat, it’s the repetitiveness of it all. Here’s my card you can follow me on the internet.
Off to Woodburn where we were detoured around the main street because they were having their ANZAC parade. South bound traffic was banked up for over a kilometre. Don’t know why they were not directed to take the same detour.
Followed the Richmond river for most of the trip and the road wasn’t too bad. Light traffic. The weather was overcast so it wasn’t too hot and a slight NW breeze.
Travelled through the Broadwater National Park so a sign said. Passed through the small town of Broadwater and I counted three caravan parks and one sugar refinery. Plenty of crops of sugar cane were evident.
Stopped for my snack break about 11.30am before riding into Ballina.
I arrived at Ballina about 1.30pm and found the street I was looking for then idly walked around town, did some grocery shopping, sat on the water front and watched some yacht racing.
I am being spoilt tonight. I am staying with Nikki and Nathan Foord in Ballina. I have a room all to myself. The shower and shave were very nice. I now feel human again after staying in two rest areas in a row.
I haven’t worked out were my destination for tomorrow will be. Somewhere about 70 or 80 Kilometres north from here.

Day 41
Date:- 24 April 2010
Distance:- 88.75 Km
Distance to Date:- 2037.6 Km
Start:- Grafton
Finish:- Tabbimoble Rest Area
Comment:- Up at 6am this morning after a good nights sleep. There was a light fog mixed in among the bush. On the road to Grafton by 7.15am. I was actually at a rest area about 10 km south of Grafton.
Pulled into a Revive, Survive station with a difference. If Wayne is reading this you maybe able to enlighten us. I had met Greg who was riding his motor bike on a daily round trip. We spent a pleasant half hour together.
Onto the Info office to see if I can glean any further information of what lays ahead. Filled all my water bottles and was on my way.
The sign just out of Grafton read Ballina 129 km Maclean 43 km and Brisbane 321 Km
On my left was the Clarence River which I followed right through to Maclean. On my right the first crop of sugar cane.
Ulmarra is an historic river port, no doubt steeped in history. From Ulmarra the road was flat and good shoulders most of the way. As the day progress a light northerly came in
Clocked up 2000 km today (Half way to Cairns, one eighth the way around Australia)
Stopped for lunch at Maclean. Had a Steak sandwich, chips and salad and a pot of tea. Sitting on the veranda of the café overlooking the river was very relaxing.
About 10 km out of Maclean I had my first real flat tyre. The rear tyre of all things, so unload everything, remove wheel, repair puncture and reassemble everything and half an hour latter we were back on the road.
I was aiming to stay at a particular rest area, but on arrival found it had been set up for trucks only. No toilets or seating. On reassessing the situation I had two alternatives either Tabb mobile Rest Area 17 km farther on or New Italy Caravan Park. I chose the rest area. It leaves about 55 Km to Ballina.

Day 40
Date:- 23 April 2010
Distance:- 67.76 Km
Distance to Date:- 1948.80 Km
Start:- Coffs Harbour
Finish:- Grafton (Brinos Rest Area)
Comment:- Up at 6.45am, after a reasonable nights sleep. Need to buy some ear plugs to dampen the noise of the passing traffic.
Had to dry the fly of the tent again - wet inside and out. Got everything packed up and went for breakfast at the park café which opened at 8am.
On the road by 8.45am and heading for Grafton. Nice hill just out of Coffs Harbour as per normal - something to warm up on. I am disappointed I didn’t see the big Banana. Head down, tail up I suppose. Next time then.
There was a good road all day today, a couple of hills needed special treatment though. The sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky, and a slight tail wind. A few clouds appeared in the afternoon and a breeze from the north or a slight head wind.
Stopped at Woolgoolga for my snack break at a “Driver Reviver” stop. Had a couple of cups of tea and a few biscuits and a chat to different people.
Had a phone call from Bill today, enquiring about my welfare and offering some advice when I get further North. I will take the advice on board, thanks Bill. You will send me those bright coloured Tee shirts. Had a quick chat with Ingrid (Bills offsider). She has been following my blog with great interest
Hoping to get to Maclean or further tomorrow and Ballina the next day.

Day 39
Date:- 22 April 2010
Distance:- 0 Km
Distance to Date:- 1880.9 Km
Start:- Coffs Harbour
Finish:- Coffs Harbour
Comment:- REST DAY. Had a bit of a sleep in this morning. Out of bed by 7.30am and had to wait for the camp kitchen to be opened.. I was not aware it was to be opened about 8am.
After breakfast I checked over the bike and trailer. 1 broken bidon cage on the trailer so I made temporary repairs. I also swapped the tyres around on the bike. The rear tyre seems to wear more than the front tyre. I have nearly done 2000 km on them and I reckon I will need new tyres by the time I get to Cairns. Gave the bike a wipe down and oiled the chain, etc
Folded most of my washing, a couple of articles were still damp. Put the sleeping bag out to air and did a general tidy up. Spoke to a few people around the park, then decided to go for a walk.
Out the front gate and up a couple of blocks I spotted a Bicycle shop. I was hoping to buy a new bidon cage but at $26 each they can stay there. Across the road was a big shopping complex. I spent a couple of hours just wandering around. I couldn’t buy anything because I would have to carry it on the bike. Every conceivable shop was there from Target, Big W, Aldi, down to hairdressers and locksmiths. Had lunch there, then to Woolworths to get tea and other supplies, then back to camp.
Gathered rest of my washing and packed them accordingly the did some research on Sodium Bicarbonate. Someone suggested it was a performance enhancing chemical. Put a teaspoon full in your water bottle and it enhances your performance. Anyone got any advice?
Down to the little Coffee shop here at the park and had the nicest mug of Latte I have had for a while. They are also open for breakfast which I hadn’t realized, so I may have breakfast there in the morning.
The rest of the afternoon spent just lazing around giving the body a chance to recharge. Bought a microwave meal for tea along with a small can of fruit a nice cup of tea and I should have an early night.
I will be aiming to get to Grafton or a rest area before, tomorrow night. At this stage I am about 3 days ahead of schedule.

Day 38
Date:- 21 April 2010
Distance:- 73.31 Km
Distance to Date:- 1880.9 Km
Start:- Paddy’s Rest Area
Finish:- Coffs Harbour
Comment:- Up at 6am today after a reasonable nights rest. There were about 10 cars camping here overnight. Also the contractors were here cleaning the toilets and emptying the rubbish bins and generally cleaning up. Good to see. A couple of campers came over to inquire about what I was up to and were in for a chat.
I was on the road by 8.05am this morning. A reasonable road to start and I arrived in Macksville about 9.30am. It is a reasonably sized town. Crossed over the Nambucca River and headed off down to Nambucca. The road followed the river so was quite a pleasant ride. I decided not to go into the town and kept going on to Coffs Harbour.
The road between Nambucca Heads and Urunga leaves a little to be desired, up and down, very little shoulder and a bit of traffic. As I was catching my breath on one of the hills a cyclist caught up to me. Stephen, I think, I am not good on remembering names. He was towing a two wheeled trailer and had been down south with a group ride. We chatted for a while, then parted ways. He lived in Urunga so he was nearly home.
The road from Urunga to Coffs Harbour was something else. Four lanes, a 2 metre shoulder and as flat as a tack. Makes the day worth while. I stopped at the Info Office in Coffs Harbour to find out where all the caravan parks were situated. I chose to head for a park out on the Pacific Highway and as I was travelling along I spotted a new park on the right hand side of the road, so over I went. After a brief conversation I booked in for two nights
I set the tent up, headed down the street to get some tea, back to the tent, a good shower, and then did a big load of washing. Now I am relaxing with some potato chips and a mug or two of lemonade while writing up my diary.
A nice rest day tomorrow.

Day 37
Date:- 20 April 2010
Distance:- 70.91 Km
Distance to Date:- 1807.50 Km
Start:- Stoney Park Caravan Park
Finish:- Paddys Rest Area (!0km south of Macksville)
Comment:- My departure was delayed by a shower of rain (not volcanic dust). Was able to get everything under cover, quite cosy actually.
On the road by 8.45am and the sign post said 30 km to Kempsey. Road was a bit ordinary to start with. The breakdown lane was sacrificed when an overtaking lane was installed.
Stopped at Bloodwood Rest area for my snack break about 20 km out. Well set out rest area yet I was the only one there for the 30 minutes I was there. There was 10 km to Kempsey. Back to 4 lanes about 6 km from Kempsey so it was a bit more comfortable.
Arrived in Kempsey and found the Info Office. I seemed to have more info than they could offer me for my ride north, but they did say stop at Freddy’s Pie Shop on the way.
Through Kempsey, over the McLeay River and onto Fredrickton where I had lunch. There were about 50 different pies to choose from - crocodile, emu, rabbit, camel, kangaroo, and many different combinations. I had a boring steak and onion pie with a pot of tea followed by a thick shake.
Back on the road again and it was quite a pleasant ride. I was going to Macksville but when Paddy’s Rest Area came up it looked very inviting, so in I went. Just got the tent up and all my gear stowed when we coped a heavy shower of rain. I think someone is looking after me.
Early night tonight as there are no lights and hopefully a good nights sleep
Hope to make Coffs Harbour or nearby tomorrow and have a rest day there.

Day 36
Date:- 19 April 2010
Distance:- 82.35 Km
Distance to Date:- 1736.5 Km
Start:- Cundletown CP
Finish:- Stoneypark Caravan Park
Comment:- Up at 6.30am to the sounds of many birds. Took a short walk along the river before having breakfast. Was able to watch TV while having breakfast. What a luxury. I found it hard to leave.
Anyhow I was on the road by 8.45am, back to the Pacific Highway about 3 km. Nice flat road for the first 18 km then a gentle hill. Sun was shining and a light northerly wind.
I had a senior moment as I was riding, I took a left hand lead off the highway and was wondering where all the traffic had gone, then I realized, and had to work my way back to the highway.
Another 5 km down the road I ran into roadwork’s, actually 35 km of them. North bound lanes were closed, then the south bound lanes and so on. It was hard going - bike lane, then no bike lane or ride in the bright hand lane into oncoming traffic. We survived.
A couple of threatening clouds hanging around again. Have already had a couple of light sun showers. Stopped under a bridge for my snack break about 12pm
Roads were wet but I was lucky it never rained where I was. Crossed over the Hasting River on my way to Kempsey. Not much in the way of rest areas or caravan parks so I decided to go for Kempsey, until I saw a sign pointing to a caravan park, so in I went
The Stoneypark Caravan Park at Telegraph Point. A very new park with large man made lakes designed for wake boarders and water skiers. A nice camp kitchen similar to last night, it’s a hard life.
Not sure how far I will go tomorrow and I am nearly due for a rest day to catch up on some washing and recharge the batteries.

Date:- 18 April 2010
Distance:- 76.41 Km
Distance to Date:- 1654.10 Km
Start:- Bulahdelah
Finish:- Cundletown (Dawson River Tourist Park)
Comment:- Last night after I wrote up my dairy organized the Bowling Club Courtesy Bus to take me to their club. Had a very good meal and drink there, then went back to the park via the Courtesy Bus. In bed by 8.30am but had a restless night. It rained frequently through the night and when I arose at 6.30am the sun was shining but everything was wet.
Tried “Macca” again this morning, but again unsuccessful, He has bigger fish to fry.
Listening to the forecast for the area we may get a shower or two through the day. We will see what happens and deal with it accordingly
On the road by 8.30am with a nice long gradual hill to start with. I am expecting more traffic on the road today as N.S.W. kids go back to school tomorrow.
Passed through the little town of Coolongolook then walked the steep hill out of Coolongolook.
Threatening clouds building in the north east. About 3 km from my designated snack stop the road was wet and approaching cars had their wipers on. Doesn’t look good. About 1 km out a light misty rain. Arrived at the Wang Wauk Rest Area and was able to shelter under the shelters they provide until the weather cleared.
These Rest areas that are situated every 30 or 40 km are really impressive setups. Modern looking buildings with flush toilets, electric hand dryers etc, plenty of parking, and they have either a kids playground for the kids or exercise equipment (parallel bars, stepping stones, etc) for the older kids.
The next 35km to Taree was slightly undulating but quite a pleasant ride, and I arrived in Taree about 3pm. Went to the Super Market to refresh my food supplies then went looking for the Info Office, found it out the other side of Taree, and it was closed of course.
The caravan park was just another 4 km down the road and I arrived there about 4pm. Very nice setup on the banks of Manning river I think. A very well setup Camp Kitchen:- fridge, microwave oven, electric jug, toaster, television, BBQ gas plates and hot and cold running water.
The receptionist suggested I go to the local Pub for tea. They have a roast of the day and a sweet for $10 on a Sunday night. So off I went to the Pub, and, yes, it was a really good meal.
Back to the caravan park, do my diary then off to bed.
Hope to get close to Port Macquarrie tomorrow.

Day 34
Date:- 17 April 2010
Distance:- 79.70 Km
Distance to Date:- 1577.7 Km
Start:- Tomago Caravan Park
Finish:- Bulahdelah Caravan Park
Comment:- A goods nights rest was had. Up at 6.30am to find the tent was wet inside and out - condensate on the inside and a heavy dew on the outside, so I removed the Fly and spread it out to dry.
Sun is shining, little or no breeze, so hopefully another nice day to enjoy. The caravan park where I stayed last night was older but basically quite comfortable.
I was on the road about 9.15am today after trying to dry out the tent. Passed through the town of Heatherbrae fairly early. Nice looking Caravan Park, a Subway Outlet, a 711 and the Golden Arches. As it was fairly early in the day I just rode past them.
Stopped at 12 Mile Creek Rest Area for my snack break about 10.20am. A few threatening clouds around now hopefully it doesn’t rain. Crossed over the Karuah River - nice new wide bridge.
Stopped at the Wallaroo Rest Area for another snack attack and was joined by a couple driving north as well. They offered me a nice cup of tea and some fruit cake. It wasn’t bad either, but don’t tell Evon. They gave me some to take with me as well.
The rest of the afternoon was a little boring with a few hills to negotiate, a couple of downhills. I decided I would make Bulahdelah Caravan Park my destination even though there was a Rest Area a further couple of km down the road.
When the day started the first 30 to 40 Km was good going and I thought I would be able to get quite a bit further. The couple of hills and a gentle northly breeze put pay to that idea.
Tomorrow I hope to make Taree

Day 33
Date:- 16 April 2010
Distance:- 78.36 Km
Distance to Date:- 1498.0 Km
Start:- North Entrance
Finish:- Tomargo
Comment:- In bed by 8.30pm last night and out like a light. I was awoken by a shower of rain about 2.30am. I thought the tent would be wet, but no it was dry due to the overnight temperature of 15 degrees.
Anyhow up at 6.30am and on the road by 8.30am destination hopefully Tomago.
Started the first couple of kilometres on a bike path, then onto the Central Coast Highway, through Magenta, Noraville, Budgewoi, across the Budgewoi Creek and rejoined the Pacific Highway at Doyalson.
The Pacific Highway as before is very good. A couple of uncomfortable patches, mainly in town centres or crossing bridges. Stopped for a snack break about 10.30am.
A sign informed me I was entering the Lake Macquarie area, Australias largest coastal lake. You could see the lake system every now and then through the trees.
At Swansea I found the Information Office and p[icked up some more info on the area, as well as booking a site at Tomargo. I had lunch in Swansea (don’t tell Bert), then back on the road.
Back on the Pacific Highway which lead me to Belmont. Just out of Belmont I took a left turn onto the Newcastle Bypass. The roads are getting better. A couple of little hills that needed some special attention but generally flat.
The Newcastle Bypass fed back onto the Pacific Highway at Sandgate, so a left turn and I was heading for Hexham. Just out of Hexham the Pacific swung north east and a kilometre further on was my destination.
It was a very pleasant day, overcast, a light SE breeze, no showers and I felt good after my rest day.
Tomorrow destination, somewhere around Bulahdelah. I will have to check with my navigator - Evon

Day 32
Date:- 15 April 2010
Distance:- 5.01 Km
Distance to Date:- 1419.5 Km
Start:- North Entrance
Finish:- North Entrance
Comment:- Rest Day today. Had a very good night sleep last night. I was up at 7.30am, over to the laundry and hand washed all my dirty clothes and hung them out to dry. Aired the sleeping bag as well.
Had a leisurely breakfast and then sorted through my gear to see what I can off load. A few tools that I had picked up along the way as well as receipts I had collected. They will be posted back home.
Next project was to check over the trailer and bike. Checked the tyre pressure, all the nuts and bolts, all seemed to be in order. Checked the wheels, brakes, gears and tyres on the bike. I thought I may have to change the brake pads but there is still a bit more life in them yet.
Next project was to update my computer. I compiled an equipment list on the spreadsheet but I cant upload them onto the blog. I will keep trying
While I was working on the computer in the camp kitchen 3 men and their sons came to to cook their “brunch” and invited me to join them. Who am I to refuse an offer like that. Very nice - Thanks fellas
After lunch I saddle up the bike and went down to the Entrance, found a Post Office and posted those goodies back home. I wandered around the Plaza for a couple of hours. Cafes, Ice Cream Parlours, Dress shops and a Supper Market. The whole Plaza was nicely paved and there were water features everywhere. A children’s fair was set up along the foreshore and there were people everywhere. Kids are still on holidays in NSW.
Visited the Supper Market and bought tea and a few little things I needed, then returned to the caravan park. Retrieved my washing, folded and packed it ready for travel. Spent the rest of the afternoon just wandering around the park.
Tomorrow I will head for Newcastle or beyond.

Day 31
Date:- 14 April 2010
Distance:- 74.93 Km
Distance to Date:- 1414.5 Km
Start:- Mount Colah
Finish:- The Entrance North
Comment:- Its one month today since Evon opened the gate and let me go. Time stops for no one.
Up at 6am this morning, packed and down to McDonalds for a good healthy breakfast. On the road to Gosford by 7.30am. On to the Pacific highway for the first 20km through Berowa Valley, quite a pretty ride. Not as many trucks as most of them use the Sydney/Newcastle Freeway which runs parallel to the Pacific.
Prior to crossing the Hawksbury River we transferred from the Pacific to the Freeway and remained on it till the turn off to Gosford.
The two bridges I had to cross were again not bike friendly. I walked both bridges.
A very nice ruin down to the Hawksbury River but an equally demanding climb out. The same for the Long Island bridge.
The road to Gosford from the highway was, again down hill and rather steep in a few areas. I worry because the trailer I tow carries about 20 kg and is unbraked. I hope it doesn’t pass me.
Into Gosford and found the Info office and picked up a couple of maps of the area and from these and some local advice I decided to go to the Entrance. There were a few more hills to conquer as I headed out through Erina and then on it wasn’t too bad except for two lots of roadworks.
As time was getting on I decided to phone ahead to the Caravan Park I hoped to stay and I am glad I did. Office closed at 5pm. All organised, all I had to do was get there. I arrived at 6pm after a couple of wrong turns, etc.
Tent up, then off to the shower to make myself feel human again, had a coffee, cooked tea, Worked on my diary then off to bed.
Tomorrow I have elected to have as a rest day to wash clothes, check the bike over and maybe wander around town.
Since I have been on the road I have found $9.15, a 12” shifter, a screw driver, a pair of side cutters, and a 6” shifter. The amount of stuff along the side of the road is amazing. You name it its there.

Day 30
Date:- 13 April 2010
Distance:- 61.21 Km
Distance to Date:- 1339.5 Km
Start:- Emu Plains
Finish:- Mount Colah
Comment:- Up at 7am and on the road by 9am. Back to Penrith. Walked About 3 km to get through Penrith. As I said yesterday Penrith is not sa very bike friendly town.
Sun shining and a nice light SW wind. Forecast was for 24 degrees - a nice day.
Followed the Great Western Highway through St Marys and Mount Druitt before turning onto M7 Freeway. Signs pointed to a dedicated bike path which I took. The bike path ran parallel to the highway. Fully sealed, Street type lighting, road signs and line markings. I was told it ran for about 32 km.
Ran into a surveyor on the path and we had a chat as you would. He was quite interested in my challenge. A bit further down the path some maintenance men were checking the street lights.
I left the bike path prematurely, I took a left turn which lead over the freeway but then lead me onto the breakdown lane on then M7 . No problems. The M7 changed to the M2 and it wasn’t long before I turned left onto Pennant Hills Road which should take me to Hornsby.
Pennant Hills road turned out to be very busy. With no bike lane and three lanes of traffic I took to the footpath by foot. I reckon I must have walked another 5 or 6 km. I got it wrong this time, let me out into the country.
I arrived in Hornsby about 4.30 and went looking for the caravan park but to no avail so I kept heading out the Pacific Highway. By this time it was getting dark, so tea at the convenient golden arches before I set off to find somewhere to camp. It didn’t take long, a nice grassy lawn behind the local Uniting Church in Mount Colah.

Day 29
Date:- 12 April 2010
Distance:- 101.01 Km
Distance to Date:- 1278.1 Km
Start:- Mittagong
Finish:- Penrith (Emu Plains Caravan Park)
Comment:- 2321 Cars, 130 Trucks and 27 Trains I counted last night. Only joking but the caravan park was very close to the road and railway line and it was very noisy. I got a couple of hours sleep I think.
Up and on the road by 9am. Very windy, as forecast, a SE/SW wind. About 5 km out of Mittagong I rejoined the Freeway. A couple of gentle hills then I had the best downhill run of about 30km without even peddling.
Bill, I named the turtle I rescued yesterday “Kevin”. He needed a helping hand.
All bikes had to leave the Freeway (Hume Highway) near Campbelltown and I decided to go for Penrith. A couple of places along the Northern Highway were a bit uncomfortable, but we survived. Penrith is not a bike friendly town - no bike lanes, narrow footpaths, not nice.
Had trouble finding a caravan park. Asked at a Hungry Jack outlet - no idea. The BP service station - no idea. The information place was about 3km out of town and there was no way I was going to ride 3 km out to them and possibly more to find a park. There were no people in the streets to ask but finally a young girl asked me for the local taxi phone number, I didn’t know naturally but I asked her if she knew of a park and she suggested I go to Emu Plains.
I arrived at the caravan park, booked in, set up the tent, had a nice hot “timed” shower. Had tea and now doing the reports.
Again I don’t know were I will go tomorrow. Need to study a map or two and get some local advice.

Day 28
Date:- 11 April 2010
Distance:- 90.07 Km
Distance to Date:- 1177.0 Km
Start:- Goulburn
Finish:- Mittagong
Comment:- I am not going to tell Bert where I had tea last night, he will think I have shares in the place. Quite a bit of rain last night, but has cleared away this morning.
Rang “Macca” this morning and was told he would return my call about 6.30am to 6.45am. No return call - No worries
I was on the road by 8.45am this morning and was able to do a mileage check on my bike computer. Over the measured 5 km my bike computer was .01km out - Not bad.
Strong SW wind today, ok as a tail wind, but when the road turned and it was on the side I was being pushed into the traffic - not a good feeling. The road was as good as yesterdays road with some long gentle climbs and some good down hills.
Had my usual snack break at a rest area and while I was there a man from a mobile home came over and offered me tea, coffee or milk. I said no to those but asked if he could give me some water. I filled a couple of water bottles and was on my way.
Hey Bert, I had lunch at Hungry Jacks today. Wasn’t bad either. That was at Marulan
There have been a number of turtles which have unsuccessfully crossed the road (squashed). Then I came across one which was about to take his life in his hands. I stopped pick him up and took him across the four lanes of traffic and let him go. I hope he was grateful.
A sign on top of one of the hills today informs I am in the Southern
Highlands, then shortly after I was entering the Penrose State Forest.
It was about 3.30pm when I saw the turn off for Moss Vale, my destination for the day. Since I was travelling nicely I decided to head for Mittagong.
Arrived at the Mittagong turn off and onto the old Hume highway. The Caravan Park was about 4km down the road through Mittagong. Checked in, tent up, had a nice hot shower, down to the camp kitchen to cook tea and do my nightly report.
I am not sure what my destination will be tomorrow at this stage.

Day 27
Date:- 10 April 2010
Distance:- 76.27 Km
Distance to Date:- 1086.9 Km
Start:- Sutton Holiday Village
Finish:- Goulburn South Caravan Site
Comment:- We were all up, showered, had breakfast, cleared out the cabins packed ready to depart. After another round of farewells, hugs, etc., it was on ya bike and away we go.
Before we departed the owner/manager of the park where we stayed made a very nice donation towards my costs. It was very gratefully received.
After leaving the park I headed south for about 2 km then turned onto the Federal Highway which virtually took me to Goulburn. There were a couple of gentle hills to start with then it was basically flat all the way to Goulburn. A 2 meter wide shoulder all the way, what more could you want.
A number of cyclists were on the road this morning out for training runs I presume. One cyclist stopped and we had a bit of a chat. Frank was cycling under doctors orders to help remedy a medical problem.
I had my “snack” break at the Arthur Gurney VC rest area. It seems they have named the local rest areas after some well decorated local soldiers.
Arrived in Goulburn about 3.30pm and booked into the nearest caravan park, and set up for the night.
Hopefully ride to Moss Vale tomorrow.

Start:- Sutton Holiday Village
Finish:- Sutton Holiday Village
Comment:- Today we got up about 7.30am, had breakfast then left for Canberra by 9.30am.
We spent the best part of the day at Questacon - The National Science and Technology Centre. It was a very interesting thought provoking experience, and was very well setup. We had a light bite at the café then off we went to Old Parliament House where we enjoyed a nice coffee.
After a little discussion we decide to go to the Queanbeyan Bowling Club for tea, most enjoyable. Back to the cabins, a cuppa then off to bed
Time for Evon and our friends to return home and I will head off to Goulburn on my first lrg to Cairns.

Day 26
Date:- 8 April 2010
Distance:- 0 Km
Distance to Date:- 1010.6 Km
Start:- Sutton Holiday Village
Finish:- Sutton Holiday Village
Comment:- Today we arose about 7.30am and had breakfast then headed off into Canberra. We stopped at a shopping centre in Dickson so I could pick up a medical prescription.
We then drove to Black Mountain and ascended the Telstra Tower. It was a clear day and we had 360 degree views over Canberra and its surrounds. After a quick bite to eat at the tower we then decided to to visit the The Royal Australian Mint
The Mint was quite a interesting place covering the history of currency in Australia. Quite a few static displays as well as observing the employees operating the various machines was quite interesting. We also watched a 15 minute film on the mint. No free samples were offered unfortunately.
The next activity of the day was a cruise on Lake Burley Griffin, which was very relaxing and enjoyable. The cruise lasted about 1 hour and covered the history of Canberra as well as important land marks around the lake.
On the way back to camp we stopped at a shopping centre to purchase small ingredients for tea. While the girls visited the Super market we found a bike shop were I bought a new bike pump so hopefully I will be able to handle a flat tyre with ease.
Back at camp we indulged in our usual drinks and nibbles then a very nourishing tea, before having a cuppa and off to bed. Another exciting day is assured for tomorrow. Possibly a visit to Questicon, a science exhibition wis visitor participation.

Comment:- We all arose about 7.30am this morning and enjoyed a nice breakfast before heading into Canberra for the day.
We had tickets for the 10 am group to view the “Masterpieces From Paris” - post-impressionism from the Musee D’Orsay at the National Gallery of Australia.
After a light lunch at the High Court of Australia Cafeteria we visited the various court rooms and heard how they operate. An impressive building indeed.
From the High Court we walked to the National Portrait Gallery. The gallery showed the Australian of the Year awards which recognise and honour Australians who are inspirational leaders in their field.
A quick trip to the Supermarket and the bank it was back to the cabin to enjoy nibbles and a drink before a nice casserole tea, a short chat then retiring for the evening.

Day 23
Date:- 5 April 2010
Distance:- 32.20 Km
Distance to Date:- 1010.6 Km
Start:- Bungandore
Finish:- Sutton
Comment:- Up about 7am this morning and rang Evon to bring extra stuff when she comes. Had breakfast and packed up taking my time because I only have about 30km to reach my destination.
On the road by 9.30am. A gentle 2km hill before Smiths Gap, a climb uphill for about 1 km, and it was steep, but what a view.
About 7 km out of Bungandore I made a left turn for Sutton Had a 10km snack break today at Wamboi. Another 10Km before I turned onto the Federal Highway and found Sutton
I arrived in the township of Sutton and set about trying to find our caravan park. I finally found someone to ask, only to be told I had to back track to the highway, take the service road and it will be on your left about 5km away.
Checked in at the office, found a site, set up camp, had a very nice shower and then I was going to organise my meals from the mini mart at the caravan park. Alas the office closed at 1pm on public holidays so I rode my bike about 1.5 km to the local convenience store, got what I wanted and back to camp.
All in all it has been quite a pleasant day, sun shining, light southerly wind good roads and surprisingly light traffic.
I will be taking the next five days off to spend with Evon and our Australian friends we met in Canada. I am looking forward to our reunion and sight seeing around Canberra

Distance:- 40.15 Km
Distance to Date:- 978.3 Km
Start:- Warri Rest Area
Finish:- Bungendore Show Grounds
Comment:- Daylight Saving finished last night but my body clock didn’t. I was up by 6am fed and packed up by 7.30am, and by the time I said my various farewells it was 8am, and on our way.
It got rather cold early last night but that mug of hot tomato soup was most welcome, thanks Sheila.
Started off a beautiful day, tail wind, overcast, cool, flat road, good shoulders. Stopped for my 20km break about 10.15am with only 15km to go, I think.
Arrived in Bungendore and straight to the Info centre requesting the best way to Sutton and where to camp. Not terrible helpful on which route to take but suggested the Show Grounds as a good place to camp.
After a good lunch and purchased tea from the local bakery it was off to the Show Grounds, about 2 km west of town. Tried to find the resident managers but to no avail, so set up camp. I found the HOT showers I was told about and set about making my self feel human again. All this and its FREE at this stage.
Off to Sutton tomorrow to meet up with Evon and our Australian friends we met in Canada. They are travelling up on Tuesday

Had another bit of a yarn with Liz and Herb before they decided to head off to Goulbourn. Went for a walk along the creek before returning to camp and have enjoyed the company of Brian and Sheila from Bunbury in Western Australia.

Day 20
Date:- 2 April 2010
Distance:- 0 Km
Distance to Date:- 938.10 Km
Start:- Moyura
Finish:- Warri Rest Area
Comment:- Up about 7.30am this morning and cooked breakfast in the camp kitchen. Packed everything and off site (someone already to set up) by 9am.
Walked the bike, trailer and bike box to the bus stop (about a km) then set about putting bike into box etc. All done by 10.30am Now the big wait as the bus wasn’t due in till 2.05pm. I wasn’t game to leave the bus stop as there were some people of dubious means around, which was confirmed when a police vehicle turned up and hunted them on.
I found a wallet yesterday about 10km out of Moyura and I handed that into the police station. I may as well have either left it on the road or thrown it in the rubbish with the reception I got.
The bus arrived dead on time so we loaded the bike and gear on and away we went heading for Braidwood. I asked the driver whether he would mind dropping me at the rest area and he said no worries.
Arriving at the rest area I was greeted by about 10 or more other campers. Found a spot and set up camp and enjoyed the company of Liz and Herb.
I will spend another night here before heading to Bungendore Show Grounds

Day 19
Date:- 1 April 2010
Distance:- 42.33 Km
Distance to Date:- 938.10 Km
Start:- Narooma
Finish:- Moruya
Comment:- Out of bed by 7am, packed and had breakfast at Michaels Café again. On the road by 8.30am.
A fine cool morning, and again, that hill had to be attacked to get out of town. The hills seem a little more gentle but you still have to treat them with respect.
Passed through the little town of Bodalla and had my 20km break near Trunketabella Creek bridge.
Arrived in Moruya about 1pm and located the bike shop. Organised a box and when someone can check my rear gears. Booked into Riverbreeze Tourist Park, set up camp and back to the bike shop.
Bike mechanic replaced inner and outer cable to rear cluster and that seemed to have remedied the problem. Transported both bike and box back to camp.
Shower, tea and off to bed. Big day tomorrow.
HAPPY EASTER TO EVERYONE
