Date:- 12 Jun 10
Distance:- 76.77 Km
Distance to Date:- 4168.9 Km
Start:- Reid Creek Rest Area
Finish:- Charters Towers Tourist Park
Comment:- Up about 6am after a reasonable nights sleep. It was still very dark. I was on the road by 7.15am. Sun was just rising and a light SW wind blowing which increased as the day progressed. A good road with a reasonable shoulder most of the way.
I observed a flock of black cockatoos near the rest area then not long after a flock of green parrots with brilliant red wings. Very striking.
Travelled through the Mingela Ranges and first up a 2 km walk uphill for a nice change. I seem to be climbing most of the day with a couple of downhills and flat. I suppose I can’t stay at sea level all day.
About 50 km east of Charters Towers were road works. Construction of a new rest area I think. Snack break about 11.30am on the side of the road.
A lot of road trains carrying cattle to the coast and empty trucks returning. Moving the cattle to greener pastures for the summer.
Crossed the Burdekin river and onto Charters Towers. Took the Bypass to Hughenden and found a caravan park on the west side of Charters Towers. Booked in and had a well earned shave and shower. Off to the RSL club for tea tonight.
Campaspe River Rest Area is my objective tomorrow

Hi Geoff - I just wrote a comment & promptly lost it - & I had some good advice too!!!! So I hope the comment hasn't been posted as I will be repeating myself !! You are doing the right thing! At the beginning you took awhile to settle & then you sounded so relaxed & happy!! This is like starting again & you will settle & enjoy it. I was like that when I was living in Japan & came home at the Xmas hols. It was hard to go back but I soon settled. Saw Evon last night & she was fine. Sounds like you all had a great time. Cheers Pam
ReplyDeleteG,day Geoff, Angus here. We met over a couple of Saturday morning breakfasts in Cairns that Mundy brought you along to. Just saying g'day and letting you know I will be checking your progress every now-and-then. Those green parrots with the red wings would be King Parrots and yes ... they are striking. No doubt you will be seeing plenty of interesting wildlife, both alive and dead! You should also bump into like-minded bike riders out there. Take care. Angus
