Day 98

Date:- 20 June 2010
Distance:- 70.23 Km
Distance to Date:- 4750.3 Km
Start:- Caravan Park - Julia Creek
Finish:- Oorindi Rest Area (300)
Comment:- Last night I wandered down to the Top Pub (recommended by caravan park) and had a very nice counter tea, read the local paper then wandered back to the caravan park. I was in bed by 8.30pm

I slowly arose by 6.30am and on the road by 8.30pm. Stopped at the super market to get some fruit, etc (yes they were open Sunday morning).

Back on the road and a 10 - 15 SE wind was blowing, a cloudless sky, very good road and light traffic. All adds up to a good day until I had a flat tyre. Guess which one, yes the BOB trailer. I dismantled the tyre but couldn’t find the leak so I reassembled the wheel, pumped the tyre up and away we went. Checked the tyre again after 10 km and had to add more air and since I only had 25 km to go I stopped every 5 km and pumped the tyre up, arriving at the rest area about 12.30pm

The wind was now blowing 15 -20 knots gusting to 25 I think. Set up my tent with a little difficulty, made a coffee then tackled the tyre. Dismantled the wheel, put some water in the hand basin and presto air bubbles. One of my new expensive patches had let go. Applied a new traditional patch, reassembled the wheel and hopefully no more problems.

Its about 3.15pm and there are 4 vans here for the night, so I do have company. Tomorrow I hope to get to Cloncurry which is 66 km west of here.

  1. Geoff Sounds like a very enjoyable trip so far except for Punctures on BOB. Hopefully the new patch will hold. As for the weather we down south don't really need to hear about the weather you are enjoying up North. Except to say we are having rather chilly days and nights. Good to hear you have company in the rest areas and the opportunity to catch up with the caravaning people.
I guess you may need a rest day to celebrate day 100 in Cloncurry before you tackle the hills into Mount Isa??
    Keep those pedals turning.

  2. Thanks for the birthday wishes. Had a great 2 weeks sailing - learn the basics. In awe of how you and Evon went sailing on a smaller boat with 3 kids. Only bad think about the birthday was England's woeful soccer performance. Back home now - and having a hot shower was fantastic! Glad to see you're back on the road again and just caught up with the trip details. 14 kilos is a lot of weight lost - sounds like you need the maccas !
Good luck with the rest of the trip
    Bert
